Close Up of Small Female Breasts in Pink BraThe vast majority of women who get breast implants can go many years, sometimes even decades, without a single problem. But for the small majority of women that do have issues, breast implant malposition is a common reason for a surgical procedure known as breast revision. Fort Worth women that suffer from malposition can get beautiful and natural-looking breasts with revision surgery.

What is Breast Implant Malposition?

During breast augmentation, Dr. Max will create a pocket behind the breast where the implant will sit. This is called, appropriately, the breast pocket. Usually, the body will form a protective capsule of soft scar tissue around the implant to hold it in place. However, the implant can become loose or shift. The implant can then move to one side or sit too high or too low. When this happens it is called malposition but it is correctable with breast revision. Fort Worth women whose implants are out of place can achieve perky, youthful, and natural-looking breasts.

What Are Common Reasons for Implant Malposition?

These are 4 of the most common reasons why implants can become malpositioned.

1. Capsular Contracture

Probably the most common cause of malposition is something called capsular contracture. Above we mentioned how the body forms a soft shell of scar tissue around the implant. In some cases, this shell can harden and contract. This can force the implant up or to the side and out of position. Capsular contracture is one of the most common reasons for breast revision. Fort Worth women who are suffering from capsular contracture should contact us today.

2. Not Enough Healing

Everyone’s body heals differently and at different rates. Breast implants are often positioned higher on the chest wall during the procedure. This allows them to “drop” into place which can happen anywhere between 3 to 6 months or up to a year. But another potential cause of high malposition is if the patient wears a bra with an underwire during the healing process. The wire can “squeeze” the bottom of the breast pocket and force the implant up.

3. Size of the Implant

Low malposition is when the implant sits too low. Larger implants have more risk of this happen because they can thin out the bottom of the breast pocket.

4. Body Shape

Another cause of malposition is the shape of the patient’s ribs. In some cases, the surgeon can create a perfect breast pocket but the ribs will force the implants out of the way. This issue is still easily correctable.
