Saline versus Silicone Breast Implants
Women often come to their consultations having done quite a bit of research on silicone and saline implants. We always love when our patients do their homework and come ready with a list of questions. Here’s a little bit more information on saline and silicone implants.
- Saline – While saline used to be the most popular option, it has declined in popularity with the rise of silicone implants. However, they still have several terrific benefits. First, they require a smaller incision. This is because Dr. Max can insert them into the breast pocket deflated. Once they’re inside, he fills them to the proper volume. Also, they are by far the most cost effective, often at least $1,000 cheaper than silicone. Furthermore, if they leak, they are very safe (unlike silicone) because the saline solution inside of them is absorbed and expelled by the body just like a glass of water. However, they tend to feel harder and less natural than silicone.
- Silicone – Made from a silicone shell and filled with a sticky gel, silicone implants are much softer than saline. This leads many patients to believe that they feel more natural. However, it is very difficult to tell when the leak, which is why patients are recommended to get MRIs every year to check.
- Cohesive gel – The newest option for breast implants, women love cohesive gel implants. They are often referred to as “gummy bear” implants because of how similar they feel to the candy. They resist leaks but the patient still need to get MRIs.
