Cancer, Mammograms, and Breast Implants

Women can move forward with breast augmentation and have full confidence that it will not increase their risk of breast cancer. Many reputable organizations have concurred with the leading studies that show no link between implants and breast cancer. This is true for both saline and silicone implants. Women should also be aware of a few special considerations they may need to take for mammograms.

Mammograms are some of the best ways to detect breast cancer early. Patients with breast implants should undergo regular mammograms. But there are a few things you should know.

  • Implants Cover Tissue – One of the issues with implants is that they cover some of the breast tissue where tumors can grow. To get enough pictures of the tissue, more pictures may be required during your mammogram.
  • Moving the Implant – To get these extra pictures and get a full view of the breast tissue, the implant may need to be gently moved.
  • Special Type of Mammogram – Another thing to know is that if you have implants you may require a special type of x-ray mammogram.
  • Compression – Finally, all mammograms require some compression of the breast. With breast implants, the same amount of pressure is required. However, there is a very slight risk that the pressure can cause the implant to leak or rupture. However, this risk is well worth it to reduce the risk of cancer.
